YARMOUTH HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Pledges $500,000 For New Diagnostic Equipment

Enhanced patient service will be the end result of the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation’s commitment to raise $500,000 towards the purchase of new state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment for the Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

The fundraising initiative is a direct response to a request from the South West Nova District Health Authority for the Foundation to commit 25% of the 2 million-dollar costs for new equipment, as required by the Department of Health.

“We felt we couldn’t say no to this opportunity. By making our commitment of $500,000, the remaining 1.5 million was secured through Federal and provincial funding. These funds will purchase a much-needed new Multi Slice CT Scanner and a Digital X-Ray machine.

Annually we invest in new equipment for our hospital, however, this is the largest commitment our Foundation has made in over ten years. We have begun the preliminary stages of securing major donors and have plans to launch a public appeal later this spring. ”

Gordon Wood, Chairperson YHF

According to Staff Radiologist, Eric Woods, MD “This scanner will enable us to provide high tech specialized services/studies that we could never provide with our old scanner. Therefore the number of patients that will have to travel to other sites for some tests will be reduced.”

The major advantages of a new Digital X-Ray Unit are speed and accuracy in obtaining x-ray studies and the potential for immediately sending images anywhere that they are needed (doctors office, specialist in Halifax, etc) via digital links.

Blaise MacNeil, CEO, South West Nova District Health Authority, states,
“We appreciate the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation’s outstanding support of this new equipment and their continued commitment to our hospital and the residents of our district.”

The South West Nova District Health Authority is one of nine district health authorities serving the province of Nova Scotia. SWNDHA is responsible for delivering a wide range of health services and programs to more than 65,000 residents in Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth Counties.

The Yarmouth Hospital Foundation exists to support and enhance our hospital as a community and regional centre of excellence in health care.
