Foundation Achieves More Than 75% of Campaign Target

The Yarmouth Hospital Foundation’s Diagnostic Imaging campaign received a major
boost from six municipalities who have committed a total of $250,000 towards the
purchase of new diagnostic imaging equipment for the Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

The Municipalities who have provided support include Argyle, Barrington, Clare,
Yarmouth, Town of Yarmouth, and the Town of Clark’s Harbour. Contributions from
each area were based on the Municipalities own funding formula of hospital admissions
per municipal unit.

The contributions from municipalities, a major gift of $100,000 from the Women’s
Auxiliary of the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, plus other donations, have brought the
total of the Diagnostic Imaging Campaign to $405, 400. The goal is to raise $500,000
towards the purchase of a new CT Scanner and Digital X-Ray Unit. The remaining funds
will be raised through a Major Gifts Campaign, Special Events, Direct mail, and a
Hospital Family Appeal.

The funding initiative is a direct response to a request from South West Health for the
Foundation to commit 25% of the $2 million – dollar cost for new equipment, as
required by the Department of Health.

“The commitment of the Municipalities puts the residents of Southwestern Nova Scotia a
major step closer to new state-of-the-art equipment to aid in diagnosis. The end result of
the Diagnostic Imaging Campaign will be enhanced patient service.” says Gordon Wood,
Chair of the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation.

“A new CT Scanner will replace an out-dated scanner, allowing for much improved
imaging of patients”, says Radiologist, Dr. Eric Woods. “Since multiple images can be
obtained at the same time, this CT Scanner will allow for imaging of patients much quicker than in the past and it will also result in the ability to examine for diseases more
accurately and with greater sensitivity than before.”

The major advantages of a new Digital X-Ray Unit are speed and accuracy in obtaining
x-ray studies and the potential for sending images anywhere they are needed (i.e. doctors
office, specialist) via digital links.

The Foundation approached the Municipalities in February requesting financial support.
“The positive response indicated that every unit clearly understood the benefits of new
diagnostic equipment for the residents of the Tri-Counties.” says Gordon Wood.

The Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, established in 1970, exists to support and enhance
our hospital as a community and regional centre of excellence in health care.

The Yarmouth Regional Hospital is part of the South West Health. South West Health is
responsible for delivering a wide range of health services and programs to more than
65,000 residents Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth .
