New Fetal Heart Monitors Aim of Christmas Appeal

The second annual Christmas appeal for the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation is well under
way. The focus of this year’s appeal is to raise funds to replace existing fetal heart

On an average 500 infants are born each year at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. The
Maternal Child Unit currently has three fetal heart monitors to assist before, during and
after birth. Each one is ten years old. Although the units are fully functional, the
technical support for these aging machines is proving to be a challenge.

At a cost of $20,000 per unit the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation has pledged to raise
funds to replace at least one machine. Currently the initial target has been surpassed and
the Foundation is now working on replacing a second unit.

The annual Christmas appeal, launched in early November has resulted in just over
$26,000 being raised. In addition to the Christmas appeal, proceeds from the
Celebration of Holiday Trees (December 9th), sponsored by Rudder’s, combined with
proceeds from a Hockey for Health game, set to take place on January 4th will ensure that
two new fetal heart monitors will be on the way soon.

Hockey for Health is an initiative of Coastal Financial Credit Union. The game on
January 4th will feature Saint Mary’s Huskies and the Acadia Axemen. Tickets, available
at the Mariners Center, are $15 for adults and $12 for ages seventeen and under.
