YRH staff lottery: “I’ve actually won twice!”

When Michelle Campbell-Upton joined the Environmental Services Department at Yarmouth Regional Hospital more than 10 years ago she jumped at the chance to enroll in the staff lottery. “I’m able to support the foundation, contribute to my community and at the same time there’s the opportunity of winning something for myself,” she said. “I’ve actually won twice.”

The employee lottery draw for a $1,000 tax-free prize takes place bi-weekly on payday and all Nova Scotia Health employees and registered volunteers of Yarmouth Regional, Digby General, and Roseway hospitals are eligible to participate with a $5 per pay deduction. Funds raised are used to support the work of the foundations at Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby hospitals.

Michelle was inspired to return to school while she was working full time to become a Continuing Care Assistant and now works on 4 South. She recognized the need to support the foundation’s fundraising because she was able to observe the importance of all of the equipment necessary to serve the patients while she worked all over the hospital in housekeeping.

“Much of the equipment is very expensive,” she said, “and people from Digby around through to Shelburne come to Yarmouth for treatment and tests.”

Michelle, her husband and three adult daughters live in Yarmouth.
