Yarmouth Hospital Foundation to spend $3 million on hospital equipment in 2022
Yarmouth Hospital Foundation (YHF) is delighted to announce that it will commit $3 million to
fund new and replacement equipment the Yarmouth Regional Hospital requires to improve
services for the Tri-County community it serves.
“Last year was, in many ways, a banner year for the Foundation and our donors, helping our
community at a time during which healthcare was at the forefront of many people’s minds,”
says Board Chair Neil LeBlanc.
“The Foundation is committed to ensure that the Yarmouth Regional Hospital leads as a
community and regional centre of excellence in health,” LeBlanc says, noting that “to do that,
you need to make a serious investment to get the best equipment to allow our medical
personnel to give the best possible care to their patients. We were excited to be able to spend
$1.5 million in 2021, and we’re even more excited to double it this year.”
The Foundation Board has approved a plan for 2022 to provide 11 hospital departments with
equipment that Nova Scotia Health and the Yarmouth Regional Hospital care teams have
identified as most urgently needed.
Some of the planned equipment will be vital upgrades, replacing key pieces that are
approaching end-of-life. The single largest expense is for $1.56 million to replace the aging
laparoscopic surgical suites that were installed in 2011 with state-of-the-art equipment for
minimally invasive surgery suites. This will allow the OR staff to work more efficiently and safely
and to provide a better experience for the patient. Another $755,000 will be spent on 15 noninvasive blood-pressure monitoring systems for the Emergency Department and ICU.
Some of the other funding commitments will be for exciting and new equipment that will allow
for expansion of the services available in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Among these are several
key cardiography machines for Diagnostic Imaging which are the fundraising focus for this
year’s WE CARE Radiothon. This will be broadcast on Y95 on Thursday, March 3, from 6 a.m. to
4 p.m.
In addition to funding equipment and services for the hospital, the Foundation awards grants to community agencies that enhance healthcare in the Tri-Counties and provides several nursing scholarships. It also financially supports the Physician Recruitment and Retention project for Western Nova Scotia, as well as the Dalhousie University South West Nova Family Medicine Residency Program.
