New service launched to improve access to virtual care at Yarmouth Regional Hospital

Introducing a new service launched to help patients access virtual care! The Emergency Department at Yarmouth Regional Hospital has been facing increased challenges, due to staffing shortages and overcrowding. Complicating this further is the fact that so many of us don’t have a family doctor, so many folks have to come to the E.D. for primary care — especially if you’re someone who may have barriers to booking or accessing virtual care appointments via Department of Health and Wellness approved applications.

Yarmouth Hospital Foundation has partnered with Nova Scotia Health to reduce barriers to accessing virtual care through the Virtual Care @ Yarmouth Hub six-month pilot project, a free public service. This was announced in a press release last week — but what does it mean, in practical terms? It means that, thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we have been able to provide broadband internet-connected computers and mobile devices that have been set up in a safe room at Yarmouth Regional Hospital Learning Centre, for confidential virtual appointments from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, supported by Lacey d’Entremont, the new virtual care technician. Lacey is trained on virtual care technology and processes and will help people who are not comfortable or struggle with using the technology.

“Everyone is very excited about this project because it is an opportunity to provide personal help to people who may have trouble or questions about accessing virtual care options,” said Tracey Watkins-Allen, site leader at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. “We also expect this to relieve some pressure on emergency departments by providing an option to people who have primary care needs but can’t otherwise access services.”

Meet Lacey d'Entremont, the virtual care technician ready to assist you

With the assistance of Lacey, the new Virtual Care @ Yarmouth service can assist patients with any digital health needs where patients have access barriers, such as:

  • scheduling virtual appointments (i.e. Zoom)
  • attending VirtualCareNS registration and appointments
  • accessing mental health and addictions apps
  • accessing patient portals

in a safe, secure space.

Yarmouth Hospital Foundation managing director, Mary Surette, said: “In response to the increased urgent need of ways to access primary health care, we are only too pleased to be a partner in the Virtual Care @ Yarmouth Hub project. Helping those in our community who experience challenges or have limited access to technology to use virtual care is important. Because of our donors, this is one way that we can assist in closing that access to health care gap.”

Everyone on the Need a Family Practice Registry is eligible to sign up for and use VirtualCareNS to access a family doctor or nurse practitioner online. Yarmouth area residents can book space and the technology for virtual appointments at Yarmouth Regional Hospital by:

Yarmouth Hospital Foundation (YHF) is excited to announce the creation of a new annual $5000 YHF Sara Corning Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity (EDI) Scholarship at Dalhousie University’s School of Nursing for students of under-represented backgrounds at the Yarmouth Campus, starting this fall.

In considering addressing the ongoing need for more nurses, Yarmouth Hospital Foundation has decided to develop an annual equity, diversity, and inclusivity scholarship. “With the current rising need of healthcare workers there is an opportunity for Yarmouth Hospital Foundation to create another Nursing Scholarship,” notes Board Chair Neil LeBlanc. “To do so in a way that can help those who have been disadvantaged over the years is an important way to honour Sara Corning’s legacy and to assist in our community.”

Jody Shelley Golf Fore Health cancelled

Jody Shelley has teed off for the last time at Jody Shelley’s Golf Fore Health tournament.

Since 2005, the former NHLer has been the face and patron of the tournament which has generated $523,000 for the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation (YHF) to purchase equipment for the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, which serves Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth Counties.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced the Foundation to cancel the golf tournament, along with the Spring Gala, for 2020. Prior to the pandemic Shelley had already decided to announce that 2020 would be his last year for involvement in the event to which he has so generously lent his name and his time. The decision was based on his schedule and other commitments. Shelley now works with the Columbus Blue Jackets and is a colour commentator in Fox Sports Ohio. He remains the most popular Moosehead ever. Last November he was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. “The Foundation is tremendously grateful for the impact that this local sports legend and leader provided to the success of past events,” says YHF Board Chair Dr. Harold Cook.

Taking a closer look at cancer services in Yarmouth, Digby and Shelburne counties

Nova Scotia Health Authority’s (NSHA) Nova Scotia Cancer Care Program is conducting a review of cancer services in Yarmouth, Digby and Shelburne counties, to determine the feasibility and sustainability of adding radiation therapy services at Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

“Being diagnosed with cancer is stressful and patients and families in southwestern Nova Scotia have told us that traveling to Halifax for radiation therapy is an added strain,” said Dr. Drew Bethune, Medical Director, Nova Scotia Cancer Care Program. “They have asked us to take another look at the possibility of having these services at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital and that’s what we are doing. We are also considering other supports to help improve access to care for patients when they need to travel for specialty cancer services.”

Suicide intervention skills course answers community demand

Elisha Stairs can’t forget the day someone came into her office and announced that they planned to attempt suicide immediately after that meeting.

Stairs kept her cool and used her training to eventually help the young person to develop a safety plan for the rest of the day. She was just a phone call away for the rest of the day and at home in the evening.

The support worker/program coordinator at the Tri-County Women’s Centre credits the training she received in the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) offered as part of her Mental Health Recovery and Promotion course at Nova Scotia Community College Burridge Campus with allowing her to resolve this life-threatening situation safely.

The ball is rolling to support regional radiation therapy at Yarmouth hospital, Foundation chair says

The recent grassroots movement demanding a radiation therapy centre for the Yarmouth area is a welcome development for the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, says its chair, Don Cook.

The Foundation Board has been working quietly behind the scenes for some time to explore the need for a cancer radiation treatment centre for western Nova Scotia to be based at Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

The possibility has been on the radar ever since the Dr. Edwin Janke Cancer Centre opened in 2009 to serve Yarmouth, Digby and Shelburne Counties. It offers chemotherapy and a variety of other cancer services and support.
